Brooklyn Rivera Appears in Critical Condition After Nearly Three Years Without Proof of Life

Miskito Indigenous leader Brooklyn Rivera has been shown in critical health condition, suffering from severe physical deterioration and connected to mechanical ventilation after nearly three years in detention without clear public information about his whereabouts.

Sources linked to the Army told Confidencial that Rivera was in “grave condition” and under police custody at a hospital in Managua.

According to the official report, Rivera is suffering from bacterial and fungal pneumonia, multiple organ failure, liver cirrhosis, and requires invasive mechanical ventilation a condition that has raised alarm among Indigenous communities and human rights organizations.

The image of one of the Caribbean Coast’s most historic leaders reduced to this state has sparked outrage and renewed demands for official information.

Amnesty International stated that Nicaraguan authorities remain obligated to provide proof of life and disclose Rivera’s medical condition, while the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had already demanded information about his whereabouts and health status since 2023. International pressure continues to grow because Rivera, founder of YATAMA and one of the most prominent Miskito political leaders, remains at the center of forced disappearance allegations.
