New Caribbean Talent Makes Jump to U.S. Professional Baseball

Nicaraguan prospect Kenly Hunter, from Corn Island, signed a historic contract this Wednesday with the St. Louis Cardinals for $750,000, setting a new record as the highest-value signing for a Nicaraguan baseball player.

Hunter, just 16 years old, formalized his commitment during a press conference held at the Hilton Princess Hotel in Managua. The agreement marks a significant milestone in Nicaraguan baseball and highlights the growing talent emerging from Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast.

Carlos Balcazar, Latin American scout for the Cardinals, expressed his confidence in the young player: “We consider Nicaragua a great source of potential talent for Major League Baseball. We believe Hunter will be the Cardinals’ centerfielder in the Major Leagues in a few years; he has great projection.”

The coastal outfielder, who ranks 37th among international signings for the 2025 class, stands out for his skills across the outfield, with the ability to play all three positions. His main attributes include remarkable speed on the basepaths, a powerful arm, good contact with the ball, and promising physical projection.

“I will fight day by day to reach the Major Leagues and join the list of Nicaraguans who have reached the highest level. I would like to be the second person from Corn Island after Cheslor to make it to MLB; he was an inspiration for me,” Hunter declared during the signing ceremony.

Following the signing, the young prospect will travel to the Dominican Republic to begin his professional development in the Cardinals’ minor league system, with the clear goal of reaching Major League Baseball in the coming years.

This achievement represents not only a personal triumph for Hunter but also a moment of pride for Nicaragua’s Caribbean region, demonstrating the high level of athletic talent emerging from the Caribbean Coast
