Historic Miskito leader and founder of YATAMA dies after nearly two years in detention and months of reported health deterioration
he government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo confirmed on May 31 the death of Brooklyn Rivera, the historic Miskito Indigenous leader, founder of YATAMA, and one of the most prominent advocates for the rights of Indigenous peoples on Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast.
The announcement was made through a statement issued by Nicaragua’s Ministry of Health (MINSA), which attributed Rivera’s death to physical and neurological complications allegedly linked to long-term effects of COVID-19. According to the official version, Rivera received specialized medical care and remained under the supervision of healthcare professionals.
However, family members, Indigenous leaders, and human rights organizations had spent months warning about his declining health while he remained in state custody.

Arrested after denouncing the situation of Indigenous communities
Rivera was arrested in September 2023 shortly after raising concerns before international forums about the violence faced by Indigenous communities in Nicaragua’s Northern Caribbean region, including land invasions by settlers, territorial conflicts, and violations of collective rights.
Following his detention, authorities provided limited information about his legal status and medical condition, triggering concern among relatives and human rights advocates.
National and international organizations repeatedly called on the government to disclose his whereabouts, ensure adequate medical treatment, and respect his fundamental rights.
Family reported serious health deterioration
In recent weeks, Rivera’s relatives publicly warned about his worsening health condition. His daughter, Tininiska Rivera, criticized the authorities for failing to provide sufficient information about his medical status and questioned the conditions under which he was being held.
These concerns drew attention both inside and outside Nicaragua, particularly among Indigenous organizations that viewed Rivera as one of the most important historical defenders of autonomy and Indigenous territorial rights.

A key figure on Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast
Brooklyn Rivera devoted much of his life to defending the rights of the Miskito, Mayangna, Rama, and other Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities living along Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast.
As the founder and leader of YATAMA, he played a central role in the struggle for regional autonomy and the recognition of Indigenous territorial rights. For decades, he denounced the invasion of ancestral lands, violence against Indigenous communities, and government neglect in the region.
His death comes amid growing questions regarding the state’s responsibility to protect individuals in its custody and leaves unresolved concerns about the circumstances surrounding his detention and the deterioration of his health.

Calls for truth and justice
Following news of his death, Indigenous leaders, activists, and human rights organizations expressed their condolences and called for an independent investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding his passing.
For many residents of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast, Brooklyn Rivera remains one of the most influential Indigenous leaders in the country’s recent history, leaving behind a political and social legacy that shaped generations of community leaders and advocates.
