The European Union expressed concern and sorrow over the death of Brooklyn Rivera, the historic Miskitu indigenous leader who died after spending nearly two years in detention under the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
In an official statement, the EU highlighted the troubling circumstances surrounding Rivera’s death, noting that he had been held since September 2023 and reportedly remained isolated from his family for extended periods while in custody.
The European bloc urged Nicaraguan authorities to carry out a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the events that led to Rivera’s death, amid growing international scrutiny over the treatment of political prisoners in the country.
The EU also renewed its demand for the release of all individuals detained for political reasons, reaffirming its support for democracy, human rights, the rule of law and the work of civil society organizations in Nicaragua.
Rivera, one of the most recognized indigenous leaders on Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast, had become a symbol of resistance for many indigenous and opposition groups. His death has intensified criticism of the Ortega-Murillo government and raised new questions about the conditions faced by detainees in the country’s prison system.
