Rodney Salomon Benard, Pillar of Caribbean Softball, Passes Away

The community of Bluefields and the Nicaraguan International Softball Tournament (NIST) are mourning the passing of Rodney Salomon Benard, affectionately known as “Mr. Saló,” who departed this life on May 3, 2026.

Salomon Benard was a leading figure in community sports along Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast and one of the key promoters of NIST, an international softball tournament that brought together teams and talent from across the region. As a distinguished member and VIP affiliate, he played a crucial role in the development and growth of this sporting initiative.

Widely recognized for his commitment to youth, “Mr. Saló” was known for supporting players with his own resources, ensuring they had food and accommodations during competitions, especially throughout the traditional Labor Day weekend tournaments. His generosity and dedication earned him deep respect both on and off the field.

As manager of the “Bluefields Girls” team, he left a lasting legacy through his passionate leadership, strong character, and close connection with his players. He also assisted many young athletes in preparing for U.S. visa applications, opening doors to opportunities that positively impacted numerous families across Nicaragua’s Caribbean communities.

One of the most memorable moments of his journey came in 2004, when he organized the final NIST tournament in Bluefields, his hometown an event he proudly described as “his year” and his “last goodbye.” Text by Elisa Levy N
